OCR: Cai Lun in the Art of Papermaking Cai Lun was a petty official in charge of court affairs in the last years of the Eastern Han Dynasty. He took experiences from the wo- men's silk processing procedure, carried out constant practice and experiments, and finally made the first fine grade of paper, which was called hemp paper. He added tree bark, rope ends, rags, and rotten fishing nets to the supply of raw materials. These raw materials were processed into paper by such physical and chemical treatments as expansion, pounding, fibrillating, dewatering, and drying. In the seventh century this technique of papermaking found its way through Korea to Japan. By the eighth century it had been introduced into Arabia and then from Arabia to the European countries.
